10th-12th Spoken Word Elective at The Den (656 Marshall Ave., 38103)

Students will be introduced to the concept of microaggressions and will further their understanding by engaging in activities around spotting microagressions in their everyday lives. This workshop will teach students to recognize how different audiences can interpret language and microagressions and will teach students to understand the implications of their speech. 25 spots available.

7th-12th Cultivating Compassion in Civil Discourse Elective at Second Baptist Church (4680 Walnut Grove Rd., 38117)

Michael Gerson, an op-ed writer for the The Washington Post, will be speaking on the topic of cultivating compassion in civil discourse. 10 spots available, a parent or guardian are required to attend with students .

7th-12th Artists + Activists Elective at Orange Mound Gallery (2232 Lamar Ave., 38114)

Join the Memphis Young Cultural Innovators Hub and special guests Victoria Jones (The Collective) and Amanda Lovelee (City of St. Paul) to talk about the intersection of art and activism. 30 spots available; students are encouraged to attend with a parent or guardian.

7th-12th Blight to Bright: Beautifying the Medical District Community Action at Carnes Elementary (916 J.W. Williams, 38105)

Working with Neighborhood Preservation Inc and neighbors in the medical district, Bridge Builders will work to transform abandoned lots into positive spaces for the community by creating community gardens, planting flowers, picking up trash, and painting and creating kid friendly spaces. 50 spots available.

7th-12th Restorative Justice and the Revolution for a Greater Education System Community Action at BRIDGES (477 N. 5th St., 38105)

Students will hear about the work of the Educational Justice CHANGE cohort, including learning about the school-to-prison pipeline and restorative justice. Students will participate in skits and do a photo gallery walk. 20 spots available.

9th-12th MLK50 Youth Convening Community Action & Elective at First Baptist Church Broad (2835 Broad Ave., 38112)

Our Time, Our Voice is a powerful convening of high school youth from across the region who will engage in experiential learning activities to develop and amplify youth voice and promote the Youth Voice Platform for MLK50. 150 spots available.

10th-12th Educational Justice Youth Strategic Review Board Community Action at BRIDGES (477 N. 5th St., 38105)

Students will learn about the Educational Justice CHANGE cohort’s strategic plan and provide feedback on its effectiveness within the Shelby County School system. Light refreshments will be provided. 20 spots available.

We will be participating in a dual mentorship program where youth mentor seniors in technology and seniors mentor adults on life experiences. 25 spots available.

7th-12th Interfaith Community Action at Temple Israel (1376 E. Massey Dr., 38120)

Working with the Temple Israel and MIFA, Bridge Builders will work in interfaith teams to serve the community around Temple Israel. Bridge Builders will also get a tour of the Temple and have a chance to debunk misconceptions about the Jewish community. 50 spots available.

10th-12th Advocating for Sexual Health Education Community Action at BRIDGES (477 N. 5th St., 38105)

Bridge Builders will participate in a “Domestic Violence 101” workshop hosted by Le Bonheur’s Be Proud! Be Responsible! that aims to help students identify healthy and unhealthy relationships and increase their awareness regarding teen dating violence. The Domestic Violence 101 workshop will be followed by an LGBTQ+ workshop facilitated by OUTMemphis. This workshop aims to provide information specifically about LGBTQ teens and their increased risks around teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and STDs. Students will also learn how to confront stereotypes held around LGBTQ teens and will practice negotiating skills for adopting safe prevention methods with their partners. Students must have signed parental consent form completed that will be emailed after registering to participate. 25 spots available.
