How did you first learn about Bridge Builders?

My older brother, Nicholas Spence, was a Bridge Builder. I attended his graduation ceremony and decided that I wanted to become a Bridge Builder! I was attracted to the Bridge’s approach to diversity inclusion, being that my high school was not very diverse.

What is your favorite Bridge Builders memory?

During a community service my junior year, we were tasked with cleaning up the South Memphis area. Initially, I was hesitant because I did not know much about the area and had heard negative things about the community. After cleaning, a South Memphis resident thanked us for cleaning up a neglected community. At that point, I realized that I had a passion for helping low-income communities because they need the most amount of service.

What did you gain by becoming a Bridge Builder?

I gained an appreciation for diversity. The Bridge Builder program was my first experience being around people that were “different” than me (i.e. race, socioeconomic status, etc.). After leaving the program, I actively sought out friends from different races and backgrounds.

What are you doing now?

I am currently the Development Coordinator for Neighborhood Christian Center. My job responsibilities include supporting the fundraising department, grant writing, donor cultivation, and special event planning.

What’s the best part of being a Bridge Builder alumni?

Being apart of such a unique group of people that value diversity and the Memphis community! Also, networking with fellow alumni has lead to many opportunities!
