7th-12th 2018 MLK50 Luminary Awards Concert Elective  Drop Off and Pick Up at BRIDGES (477 N. 5th St., 38105)

MLK50 2018 Luminary Awards Concert, an evening of music and celebration honoring the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers.   Bridge Builders will walk across the stage holding “I AM A MAN” signs to represent the Luminaries.  Bridge Builders will meet at the BRIDGES office and ride the bus to the Cannon Center and ride the bus back to BRIDGES for pickup.  Please wear dress clothes for this event.  NO BRIDGE BUILDERS SHIRTS for this event only.  20 spots available.

COMMUNITY ACTION opportunities:

Sunday, April 1st – Sunday, April 15th ongoing

7th-12th On My Own Photovoice Community Action at Virtual

Share your thoughts of Memphis with photovoice. Photovoice allows you to interact with your community through photography. This community action will allow youth to take photos of Memphis and arrange them together into a scale that rates different parts of the Memphis community, along with writing a brief explanation of the picture’s ranking. Their scales will then be compiled and given to city planners to help incorporate youth voice into the Memphis 3.0 comprehensive plan. PLEASE NOTE: if you sign up for this event, instructions will be emailed to you. 300 spots available.

9th-12th Memphis 3.0 Urban Planning Community Action at BRIDGES (477 N. 5th St., 38105)

Students will step into the minds of City Planners. They will learn what principles shape how our cities are designed, and through the different activities, they will have the opportunity to build their ideal city and to propose solutions to issues affecting Memphis. These solutions will then be given to Memphis City Planners to help shape the vision of the city in the new Memphis 3.0 Comprehensive Plan. 30 spots available.

9th-12th LITE Memphis Community Action & Elective at Crews Center for Entrepreneurship (3618 Walker Ave., 38111)

LUNCH PROVIDED. Are you interested in leading change in Memphis on an issue that you are passionate about? Participate in this workshop where you will learn what it takes to start your own non-profit or campaign! The workshop will also be a competition. 30 spots available.

10th-12th Advocating for Sexual Health Education Community Action at BRIDGES (477 N. 5th St., 38105)

Bridge Builders will participate in a “Domestic Violence 101” workshop hosted by Le Bonheur’s Be Proud! Be Responsible! that aims to help students identify healthy and unhealthy relationships and increase their awareness regarding teen dating violence. The Domestic Violence 101 workshop will be followed by an LGBTQ+ workshop facilitated by OUTMemphis. This workshop aims to provide information specifically about LGBTQ teens and their increased risks around teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and STDs. Students will also learn how to confront stereotypes held around LGBTQ teens and will practice negotiating skills for adopting safe prevention methods with their partners. Students must have signed parental consent to participate. 25 spots available.

7th-12th Facing History and Ourselves Student Teach-In on Voting: Democracy in Action Community Action & Elective at The Soulsville Charter School (1115 College St., 38106)

Youth have been at the center of some of the most pivotal moments in U.S. history.  The Freedom Summer of 1964 is one of the greatest examples of active civic participation in strengthening the health of our democracy.  Through this community teach-in we will explore the history of voting rights in the United States and strategies to increase voter engagement and access in our community today.  Parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend.  50 spots available.

CANCELLED7th-12th Blight to Bright: Beautifying the Medical District Community Action at Carnes Elementary (916 JW Williams, 38105) CANCELLED

Working with Neighborhood Preservation Inc and neighbors in the medical district, Bridge Builders will work to transform abandoned lots into positive spaces for the community by creating community gardens, planting flowers, picking up trash, and painting and creating kid friendly spaces. 50 spots available.
